So what is the real meaning of Reiki, to start with?
REIKI is a Japanese word that means ‘spiritual energy‘.
Basically, the word Reiki is composed of two words in Japanese:
REI – refers to ‘the sacred, the divine, the Soul, the miraculous’.
KI – refers to ‘the vital energy, the unseen, the energy of the Universe‘.
It is commonly known that Reiki creates an optimal environment for the body to heal itself. There are various factors which contribute to the creation of this environment.
First of all, the person receiving Reiki will be in a state of relaxation, which makes the brain waves to lower their frequency from Beta to Alpha.
Alpha brain waves ease pain and anxiety, boost resilience to stress, aids depression, induce feelings of calm, and stimulate creativity and intuition.
As we go on through the treatment, the person will go under various other brain wave patterns, thus bringing the person to an even deeper restful state, which is where the body can restore itself.
During the treatment, the Reiki practitioner transfers what’s called the ‘chi, or qi’, in other words, the Universal Life Force Energy, the ‘KI’, in Japanese, or the ‘Prana’, in Sanskrit.
This universal life force energy is a powerful, creative energy which gives life to matter, and which maintains life in all beings.
In Sanskrit it is named PRANA:
‘pra’ means ‘to exist before’
‘ana’ means ‘an atom’.
Therefore, PRANA, i.e., the Universal Life Force Energy is ‘everything that exists before an atom’.
Prana, the Universal Life Force Energy, is everywhere. It is what your atoms are made of.
Did you know that about 99% of your body is made of atoms? Atoms of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen.
All these atoms were created by the Prana, the Universal Life Force Energy. And the life of your atoms is maintained by the Prana, the Universal Life Force Energy.
So, to sum up:
YOU ARE MADE OF PRANA, YOU ARE MADE OF THE UNIVERSAL LIFE FORCE ENERGY.
Around you, there’s also Prana. It’s everywhere. Atoms can join together to form molecules. Molecules form most of the objects around you.
Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter, any matter in the world. Including yourself. A table, a tree, a river, the air, and you!
While the person is receiving a Reiki treatment, the practitioner, who has been trained to TRANSFER the ‘chi, qi, KI, Prana, or Universal Life Force Energy’, activates and passes on this Prana energy onto the person receiving the treatment.
How does this transfer of Universal Life Force Energy affect the person receiving the Reiki?
The practitioner activates and transfers this powerful creative life force energy onto various locations of the body. But not only on the physical body that you can see. There are other layers of energy around your body which are invisible to the human eye. These are called the etherical body layers.
There are seven main locations, referred to as ‘Chakras’, where the practitioner will be working on.
But what is a Chakra? It is an energy centre which acts as the gateway between your own Prana and the Prana around your body.
You can think of a chakra as the reset button.
Each chakra is directly and intrinsically associated with individual organs, glands, hormones and plexus of neurons. This is a representation of the main gateways to Prana:

When the Reiki practitioner is activating and passing on the Prana into the receiver throughout all these energy centres, the energy in these centres organises itself into coherent waves of energy.
This, reorganises what was ‘blocked energy‘ into ‘unblocked energy‘, what was ‘stuck energy’ into a ‘flow of energy‘, what was ‘dis-ease’ into ‘ease‘.
It is your own atoms which organise themselves into coherent waves of energy again. This results in harmony and ‘ease of energy’ in your organs, glands, hormones, plexus of neurons, tissues, muscles, and cells.
Other people call this ‘ease of energy’, healing!!
Let’s just look at the origin of the actual word HEALING!!!
From Old English hæling, It means ‘restoration to wholeness, restoration to health’.
And indeed, what we do when we practise Reiki, is to assist the atoms of your body to find their wholeness, their coherence, their inner balance once again.
In other words, the practitioner assists your atoms to organise themselves into coherence, into wholeness, into healing.
Oh, and last! And the most exciting bit! A good well trained Energy Healing Reiki practitioner will assist your atoms into restoration by distance in the same way they can manage to do it face to face.
